We've all heard about the fall of Bernard Madoff, who is believed to have squandered $50 billion in a "giant Ponzi scheme." What has gotten less attention, however, is Madoff's extensive campaign contributions to many Democrats over the years.

First, should politicians and political groups who received contributions from Madoff hand them over to the authorities with the aim that some of it might be returned to investors whose money he squandered? It's become common practice to return campaign contributions from unsavory individuals.
Second, the SEC admitted it dropped the ball of Madoff. But where was the "Sheriff of Wall Street" then-Attorney General Eliot Spitzer (1999-2007) when this was going on? If there were "red flags" about Madoff's operation, then why didn't the AG's office pick up on them?

He also gave money to Vito Fossella and Billy Tauzin. It would be interesting to look for a pattern among his donees.
